Top tips for your big day

Getting hitched, tying the knot or plighting your troth. Whatever you call it, planning a wedding is stressful. Who should sit next to grumpy uncle Graham? How badly will your best man stitch you up in his speech? Will you get too drunk and start breakdancing? These are important questions the engaged man must ponder.

If you’re organising your big day, and you feel like you’re being battered by a tempest of admin, take heart from Morrie and Betty Markoff: they've been married nearly 80 years and they're still very much in love. Bless.

The couple say there’s no secret to the success of their partnership, but our guess is that it’s because Morrie looked so dapper when they took their vows.

However hectic the run up to your nuptials gets, your look is one thing you can control. A beautiful suit deserves a great haircut, and a face that’s received a little more TLC than that weekly scouring with a Brillo pad.

Here are our top five tips to see you right above the shoulders

Time it well

Haircuts look their best a few days or a week after they’re done, once they’ve had a chance to settle in. So, don’t leave booking your appointment to the last minute. Give yourself plenty of time, relax and let your favourite barber work his magic.

Keep it classic

Your wedding day is not the time to try out a wild new style, however much you’d like to aggravate your mother-in-law’s arachnophobia by turning your hair into a spider. Your grandkids might see those photos. Stick to the cut you love, or, if you think your look needs a refresh, talk to your barber in advance. He can suggest something that suits your face shape and hair type.

Know your shave

If you plan to be clean shaven, do it the night before to give any redness a chance to subside. If you want a rugged stubbly look, work out how many days’ growth looks best and trim accordingly. If you’re the proud owner of a full beard, make sure it’s tidy and cared for.

Love your face

Don’t overindulge at the bar the night before your wedding. That’s one surefire way to avoid a pasty mug, but that’s not all: to ensure a radiant complexion when the time comes, get into the habit of drinking plenty of water, using a good-quality moisturiser and exfoliating once a week.

Best men scrub up too

It’s standard practice to set a dress code for your best men. Alas, your considered sartorial choices could be let down by their sloppy grooming. Book a group appointment for a luxury wet shave or haircut at a top-drawer London barber; it’s a great way to bond.
